    DBGB and the Art of Splitting the Check

    Last night a few friends and I hit the bar at DBGB for a beer and oyster tasting that turned into one hell of a good meal.  I wasn’t surprised… any stylish New Yorker knows that a restaurant that carries the name Daniel Boulud is bound to be exceptional.  This was my first time at DBGB, and I have to say I really loved the atmosphere and decor.  The bar room is made up of mirrored walls decorated with decals of quotes about life, pleasure, and good food from many famous chefs, movie stars and the like.  The dining room is cozy and has the feel of a modern tavern, where the kitchen staff sit behind open shelving filled with copper pots and white dishes.  The bathrooms are wallpapered in old french culinary catalogues.

    While the entire meal went without a blip, a seriously awkward moment happened with one of our dining partners when the check arrived.  This was my first evening meeting this gentlemen and I have to say I wasn’t impressed with his restaurant etiquette or social skills.  (Well, firstly he brought outside food into the restaurant and was eating it at the bar, which anyone should know is completely disrespectful to the establishment… please NEVER do this.  It’s so embarrassing.)  I won’t go into detail about the exchange with the check, but it did inspire me to share this article I found from The AWL about the proper way to split a check at a restaurant.  Too many times proper manners are ignored in this day and age, but this is something everyone should know.
